The Trinidad and Tobago Solid Waste Management Company Ltd (SWMCOL) has closed the Guanapo Landfill in Arima until further notice.
It is because of the environmental threat caused by a fire that began last Thursday. The waste management company sent a notice to all regional corporations, neighbouring communities and the general public advising them about its decision.
The notice advised everyone to use alternative waste disposal facilities at Beetham Estate and Forres Park, Claxton Bay.
In a media release Tuesday SWMCOL assured the public that its Integrated Waste Systems and Operations Divisions are working together to get the fire fully under control.
“We wish to assure all stakeholders that they would be promptly notified when the situation has improved and the site is reopened,” SWMCOL stated.
The company also apologised to neighbouring communities affected by the fire and said it is doing everything "in our power to extinguish the fire."
It is continuing to investigate how the blaze started and has asked the public for help. It has urged anyone with knowledge of the cause of the fire to contact the Arima police.
