Attorney General Anand Ramlogan told the Senate Tuesday there is no truth to the statement from the opposition that the government is introducing postal codes as a first step to bringing in a new property tax.
The suggestion about the tax came from PNM Senator Terrence Deyalsingh. He asked the government to clarify its position.
"I would like a clear statement that the information compiled with the use of postal codes will not be used to value properties for the introduction of property tax,” Deyalsingh said. And he asked: “Is it a back-door strategy to value our houses and bring back the property tax?”
Ramlogan responded that the idea suggested by the opposition is "far fetched". He said: “I go tell you now. No!”
The introduction of postal codes brings Trinidad & Tobago in line with developed nations and makes the service more efficient and cost effective.

It got support from independent Senator James Armstrong who said, “It is something that I strongly support and that I think TTPost should proceed with.”
Another independent senator took issue with the accounting methods of the post office. Helen Drayton accused the corporation of failing to provide audited accounts and business plans. “TTPost has not provided audited accounts in accordance with the law for the past seven years,” she said.
