The United National Congress announced late Sunday night that its Elections Committee has agreed to extend nominations for the March 24 internal election to Sunday March 18.
In an official statement from Khemchan Ramdath, Chairman of the party's Elections Committee, the UNC said the extra time is to allow the committee to issue a revised and final list of electors by March 18.
"While no objections and/or queries were made to the preliminary list issued before Nomination Day the Committee did receive queries on Nomination Day from persons whose names were not on the preliminary list," Ramdath said.
He added, "In the interest of fairness, transparency and full participation by all members of the United National Congress, the Election Committee of the United National Congress has decided to issue a revised and final electoral list by Wednesday 14th March 2012 and to extend the period of nomination to Sunday 18th March 2012."
The party said it concluded a full day of nominations on Sunday 11th March 2012 for positions on the National Executive of the United National Congress in keeping with its timetable for party elections on March 24th 2012. At least 66 nominations were received.
