Mickela Panday - name not on electoral list |
The Group, which is being advised by former UNC Leader Basdeo Panday, had said it would contest all 17 posts that are up for election.
However, Panday told reporters her name was not on the official list at the UNC headquarters so she is unable to get nominated. She had considered running against Jack Warner for the post of chairman of the party.
Her father said his name and the names of the majority of the Panday family are no longer on the official voting list compiled by the party. He told local media that is evidence that the election would not be fair.
The Express newspaper said it spoke to the former UNC leader by phone. “We had a feeling for some time that they are going to steal the elections and every day it is becoming more and more clear that is going to happen," the paper quoted him as saying.
He added, "I went to the office to ask if my name was on the list. I was told that I have to fill out a form and leave it. I refused. I went to the headquarters where they have the list there and I was told...that I have to fill out a form and leave it with them and they will contact me to tell me if I am on the list.
“The plan is to humiliate as much as possible so that you are frustrated and you abandon the attempt to make change,” said Panday.
Panday is of the view that there is a political vacuum being created suggested that "if the election is stolen" the people would have no choice but to protest all over the country or form a new political party.
Despite his complaints about the process Generation Next, led by Mickela Panday, is putting up a slate with a candidate for 16 of the 17 posts. There is no nominee for the chairmanship.
The younger Panday, who said she is a lifetime member of the party, told reporters "If they do rectify it before voting day, of course I’ll be able to vote. But if they don’t, I won’t be able to vote either,” she said.
UNC elections officer Ramona Ramdial said Sunday night: “There was an elections committee that was appointed and ratified by Natex (the national executive) to have the election process run smoothly, and I think if there was a concern by Ms Panday she was supposed to take it to the secretariat, and then the elections committee would looked at the listing and give her feedback. If that was not done, then we don’t know what was her procedure.”
