Warner faces challenge from former ally for UNC chairmanship

A former UNC Youth Officer and a close ally of Jack Warner - Ashvani Mahabir - will run against Warner for the post of chairman. He worked closely with Warner in the 2010 UNC election in which Warner defeated Vasant Bharath in a landslide.

Mahabir, who is a lawyer and also a director at the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC), told local media his challenge to Warner is part of a healthy democracy.

“I’ve been a member of the UNC for several years. I have come up from the level of youth officer to chairman of the youth arm in 1995. I believe I can offer something to the party. I have filed for the position of chairman of the UNC. I believe that I can bring some sort of fresh direction,” he told reporters.

However he was emphatic that he has no problems with Warner’s chairmanship. “No, absolutely not,” he stated when asked the question.

Media reports say two of the three deputy leaders are running again - Roodal Moonilal and Suruj Rambachan. The third, Lyndira Oudit, has decided to run for the post of Deputy Chairman, currently held by Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan.

Khan indicated last week that he might not run again due to the amount of work in his ministerial portfolio. However he said many of his constituents wanted him to seek a post of deputy leader. Media reports suggest that another person seeking the deputy post is people minister Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh.

Oudit, who is Vice President of the Senate, is facing a challenge from Khadijah Ameen, chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation.

Brian Baig, a former UNC temporary senator and executive member of the Youth Arm, will contest the post of education officer, currently held by Daphne Phillips; Ravi Ratiram, TSTT vice-chairman is seeking to unseat party organiser, Vinush Maharaj.

Former journalist Sunil Ramjitsingh is leading a slate of candidates. He is running for deputy leader along and is calling his slate UNC SOLDIERS. He is not fielding a full slate. His candidates are:

  • Vice-chairman: Denise Carew

Ramjitsingh works as a communications adviser for Warner. However the Works and Infrastructure Minister is not supporting the slate. Warner has made it clear that he will run for the chairmanship as an independent and won't support any team.
