The Airport Authority of Trinidad &Tobago (AATT) is increasing its Passenger Service charge from $100 to $200 from June 1, 2012.
The Guardian media reported that Transport Minister Devant Maharaj confirmed the 100 per cent increase on Saturday, noting that the last increase in the tax was 10 years ago.
The previous Manning administration changed the Departure Tax in 2008 to the Passenger Service charge on each travel ticket with the exception of tickets issued to those individuals who were exempted from the payment of the tax under the existing law.
The tax comprises a security fee of $25 and $75 to be paid to the consolidated fund.

"We have no choice. If somebody has to worry about a $100 increase as they buy a ticket to go away they would have other problems involved. I think the new fee is reasonable," the Guardian quoted the minister as saying.
It said Maharaj added that the increase is small compared to the prices people paid for visas and airline tickets.
Maharaj told the paper the airport barely earns enough from the collection of fares and fees. The Guardian said a survey found that several travel agencies did not know of the increase in fees.
