Works and Infrastructure Minister Jack Warner expects that with his ministry's Programme for Upgrading Road Efficiency (PURE) back in business hundreds of projects will begin, providing more than 3,000 jobs.
Warner made the comment to reporters after he met with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who announced earlier this month that PURE would remain within the works ministry.
The unit's work was suspended last year to allow an audit. Finance Minister Winston Dookeran reported last Thursday that the audit found no corruption under the watch of Warner.
Warner confirmed that the PURE unit will be officially returned to his ministry after Thursday's Cabinet meeting.
Warner told journalists he and the PM discussed matters relating to PURE. "We had a meeting to discuss the reinstitution of PURE and how quickly PURE can come on stream. We discussed this at length and the amount of projects and the amount of work we will have," Warner said.
"PURE can start work as early as Friday," the minister said. There are 166 projects waiting and each would require the hiring of personnel, Warner said.
