Party card not necessary to vote in UNC election

Members of the United National Congress (UNC) will not be required to present their party cards in order to vote in the party's internal election on March 24.

An official at the party's headquarters confirmed that to JYOTI Sunday, noting that a national ID card will be needed.

The same rule applied in the 2010 internal election at which Kamla Persad-Bissessar defeated Basdeo Panday for the post of leader in an unprecedented landslide.

Some UNC members and potential candidates have stated that the party has issued more than one party card to some people and have suggested that these people might be able to vote more than once. They say at the same time other party members have not got their cards.

However the party assured JYOTI the card matter is a non-issue since any member of the party can vote if his/her name is on the electoral list. No party card is required. All that is needed is a national ID card.

There are about 25,000 names on the revised list, which was published by the party last week. The election is based on a one-member, one vote system.

About 70 persons have entered the race for the 17 available positions on the national executive. Voting is scheduled to be held a centres through the country on Saturday. The party expects to announce the preliminary results within hours of the close of polls.
