66 candidates to contest UNC internal election

The Elections Officer of the United National Congress (UNC) said on Sunday the party expects that on Monday it will release a full list of candidates for next Saturday's internal election for 17 posts on the UNC's national executive.

The only post that is not being contested is that of political leader, which is currently held by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Ramona Ramdial told reporters that at close of nomination on Sunday more than 60 persons had been nominated to contest the election.

She is running again on a slate that is led by Deputy Leader and Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal. Another Deputy Leader, Dr. Suruj Rambachan, is also on Moonilal's slate along with several incumbents. No one running for the post of chairman.

There are two other slates. One of them - Generation Next - is supported by former UNC leader Basdeo Panday. His daughter, former Oropouche MP Mickela Panday, was supposed to run for the chairmanship but she did not file papers for the post. That leaves the slate without a candidate for chairman.

The third slate - UNC Soldiers - is led by UNC activist Sunil Ramjitsingh. Like the other two, it does not have anyone running for the post of chairman.

Jack Warner is the incumbent chairman who is seeking re-election. His main opponent is attorney Ashwani Mahabir, a former political researcher for Warner. Both of them are running as independents. There is one other candidate for chairman - Mooniram Heru.

Nomination Day was last Sunday. However the party's election committee decided to extend it by a week after complaints that there were discrepancies in the electoral list. A revised final list was published by the party on Wednesday last week.

The election is being held on the basis of one member, one vote. Only those members on the list would be eligible to vote.
