Jack Warner launches his campaign for re-election as chairman of the United National Congress (UNC) on Saturday at 7:00 pm at a rally Pierre Road recreation ground in his Chaguanas West Constituency.

He also plans to hold daily meetings from Sunday, ending with a motorcade on March 23, the day before the UNC's internal election. Warner was first elected as chairman in the 2010 internal election when he won a landslide over Vasant Bharath, the candidate for the Panday slate in that election.

That was the election that also saw UNC founder Basdeo Panday go down to defeat by Kamla Persad-Bissessar who then united the opposition and won the general election that Patrick Manning called two years ahead of time.

Warner is not running with any slate of candidates, a strategy he successful used in 2010. So far hids opponents are UNC activist Ashvani Mahabir, community activist Mooniram Heru and lecturer Asha Sooknanan. Mickela Panday stated Tursday he will not run against Warner.

There was speculation that the former MP for Oropouche West would challenge Warner. However she dismissed those rumours, saying she was unable to file nomination papers because her name was not on the electoral list. A new revised list was prepared and published on Wednesday and the final day for nomination is Sunday.
