Mickela not running in UNC election

Mickela Panday is not running as a candidate for any of the 17 posts in the national executive of the United nationalCongress (UNC).

The former MP for Oropouche West and daughter of UNC founder Basdeo Panday dismissed rumours that she is running against Jack Warner and others for the post of UNC chairman.Warner is the current chairman.

The Guardian newspaper quoted Panday as saying she did not file any nomination papers. The deadline for nominations is on Sunday for the vote on March 24.

Warner is facing a challenge from his former associate, UNC activist Ashvani Mahabir, community activist Mooniram Heru and lecturer Asha Sooknanan.

Panday said she is concerned about the membership list which was revised and published onWednesday. She said she is concerned that the list has been "sanitised" and fears that the election would not be free and fair.

Panday explained that since her name did not appear on the membership list she was unable to file nomination papers for any post. Panday said she has to verify if her name is on the revised list.

“What is most important is my name was taken off the list. Who took my name off the list? When did my name come off the list and why was my name taken off the list?...Those questions have not been answered and I think someone has to answer in order for us to put some clarification on the issue,” she said.
