A Toronto-based organisation called Friends of Trinidad & Tobago (FOTT) is hosting a special event on December 3, 2011 to honour former T&T Prime Minister Basdeo Panday.
A release from the organisation said the event is to recognise Panday's contribution to Trinidad & Tobago and his extensive work in fighting for national unity and the eradication of poverty in the country.
Panday is the founding leader of the United National Congress (UNC) and was Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago from November 1995 to December 2001 when he was fired by President Arthur Robinson, who appointed PNM leader Patrick Manning to head the government following a constitutional impasse caused the an 18-18 tie in the general election of 2001.
Panday lost the leadership of the UNC to Kamla Persad-Bissessar in a hotly contested internal election in January 2010, facing a humiliating 10-1 defeat. It was the first time that his leadership was challenged in a party election.
Persad-Bissessar united the UNC and then formed a five-party alliance which she led in the May 24, 2010 general election that toppled Manning and the PNM with the new People's Partnership scoring a landslide victory with 29 of the 41 seats in the House of Representatives.
