The Trinidad & Tobago state television service CNMG reported on Thursday that police used telephone eavesdropping to uncover a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and other top cabinet ministers.
The legal use of wire tapping is allowed under the Interception of Communications Act 2010, which gives police powers to intercept telephone calls and other means of communication when investigating matters of national security.
CNMG said the electronic eavesdropping helped police gather evidence that led to the arrest of a police sergeant and a gang leader based in central Trinidad. The investigators from the Criminal Intelligence Unit had tapped the telephones of both of them.

The tv service said police arrested the sergeant on Wednesday at the St Clair Police Station, which is close to the office of the Prime Minister.
The police officer is being questioned about the plot to assassinate the Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and other cabinet ministers. CNMG said the officer under arrest is the son of a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, adding that he has had a long standing relationship with the gang leader.
CNMG said the same policeman and two other senior police officers from the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit were transferred from the unit after they were implicated in the kidnapping of businessman Kenneth Medford.
