Government in control, security forces remain on alert

The National Security Adviser to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said on Thursday despite treasonous threats national security forces are in control.

Gary Griffith added that the plotters wanted "the State of Emergency to be seen as a dismal failure and because of their concern that the State of Emergency has affected them."

And Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs confirmed that about 12 persons are already in custody in connection with the plot to assassinate the Prime Minister and top government ministers. Among them are police officers and soldiers.

Gibbs told reporters at a security briefing that the security forces remain on high alert and "are working assiduously" in relation to the threats the police received in connection with national security and members of the Government.

The police chief also dismissed talk from some sources, including the opposition, that the plot is a hoax. However he did not give specific details of the plot since doing so would compromise national security.

"It is very important for us to keep the details close to our chest we do not want to compromise national security," Gibbs said.

"We get information from all different sources but we would not divulge where this information has come from, certainly we have taken up people and because of this national threat that we have received these people are detained and further investigations are continuing," Gibbs said.

The commissioner also dismissed the opposition claim that the news of the plot is just a "smokescreen" intended to justify the possible extention of the state of emergency.

"All I can say is that we all expressed that there is a threat and if you choose not to believe that then I guess that is your prerogative, but certainly as there has been expressed a clear threat that has come to the Police Service, we have acted on that threat and it is in national security interest to keep those details close to our chests."

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar called the plot "an evil, devious act of treason," and added that the names of those involved "will come to light in time".
She also gave the assurance that the Government is in control and the security forces in the country remain on full alert.
