Although Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has advised her security officials to meet with the Leader of the Opposition to provide details of the assassination plot, the People's National Movement (PNM) is skeptical.
Opposition Senator Fitzgerald Hinds said Thursday the Prime Minister's explanation lacked details and necessary information to substantiate the alleged plot against her and three senior Government officials.
Hinds suggested the news of a plot may have been set up as "a smoke screen" to extend the State of Emergency and re-impose the curfew. He called it an attempt "to oppress the labour movement and Opposition".
He added, "We continue to hold the view that in the absence of serious, specific information, this may be or may not be true. It may all be a figment of the Prime Minister's very colourful imagination. We do not know."
Hinds said the Government's credibility has been brought into serious question.
"Up to now the only people in this country who are aware of this averted plot are the Prime Minister, the Attorney General and perhaps the shadow Minister of National Security," he said,
He said he would welcome any details which the Opposition Leader chooses to share "with us or the national community".
