Letter to chairman of Integrity Commission

Dear Sir,

Your public comments on Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar choice of staying with her friends, the Gopauls, in Tunapuna adds nothing to the current investigations at NP but a further blurring of the lines, and confusion.

You have said that the issues at NP could have been averted if the Prime Minister stayed at a hotel. This, Sir, is nonsense.

The economy inherited from the last Government is one where a lot of money is still to be accounted for and the present Government is forced to make much out of little. Therefore the expense of staying at a hotel is not a luxury that the Prime Minister chose to burden the State with.

And what if the Prime Minister stayed at a hotel? Then what? Questions would have been raised about her choice of hotel? Your point makes no sense and is not logical Mr St Cyr.

In addition and more important, as Chairman of the Integrity Commission, to make a public comment on an issue involving the highest profile public figure in our country - the Head of Government - is to surrender any right to hold your position especially since you stated clearly according to reports: "It's not a finding of the commission because, as I said, we haven't investigated or gone into the details, but it's clear and that's in my opinion."

So Sir, please tell the nation, what if an investigation is brought before you regarding this matter?

How will you in good conscience make a ruling, having already expressed a personal opinion on an issue that is not even before you yet?

What you have done Mr St Cyr is to blur the lines of your authority, talked out of turn and tarnished your office and the members of the Integrity Commission by putting personal opinion first, at the expense of the very sacred responsibilities you are charged with.

As a member of the public, I am therefore publicly stating that you no longer have my confidence and you must now consider stepping down from your position.
