Government working on increased compensation for officers killed on duty

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said on Sunday the Government plans to increase compensation packages offered to bereaved families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

She made the comment within hours of the funeral of Police Constable Anil Persad, who was killed last week during a shootout with marijuana growers in the Charuma Forest. Persad, 30, had served for nine years.

Family, friends and other mourners attended the cremation Sunday at the Mafeking Cremation Site in Mayaro. The slain officer lived at San Pedro, Poole Village, Rio Claro.

Persad-Bissessar extended condolences to the family and said she was saddened to learn of Persad's death.

"From what I understand he was a brave man who died in the line of duty,” she said.

She told reporters Government is reviewing legislation to increase compensation for families of members of the protective service killed in the line of duty.

"Money of course cannot bring back a life but, at the moment the package is very, very small for all the protective services. It is something we are giving consideration to,” she said.

Persad-Bissessar said that matter has been on her agenda since she was an opposition MP "so it is something that we are vigorously pursuing."
