Energy Minister pulls out of NP probe because of family ties

Energy Minister Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan got cabinet's permission Thursday to recuse herself from the NP investigation and asked that the independent investigators report directly to Attorney General Anand Ramlogan.

She took the decision after learning that she has a family link to a company associated with CDS Transport Limited, which is the company that asked for the investigation. The minister's brother's company, Seetrans Limited, has ties to CDS Transport Limited.

“Following information which I learned of only this morning and was immediately able to verify, I have asked Cabinet, in the interest of maintaining the highest level of integrity, accountability and transparency, to be recused from the investigations which are ongoing with NP,” the Minister told reporters.

“I asked to be recused from the investigation to avoid any potential conflict of interest, to ensure transparency and to maintain the integrity of the process. It is important that every action is taken to deliver a thorough and irrefutable report on the investigation at NP,” she added.

“By recusing myself, I have asked that the independent team set up to review the findings of the investigation, report directly to the Attorney General again to ensure there is no potential for a conflict of interest. The team, as you know, includes two very senior Public Servants and their work continues,” she said.

Seetrans and CDS Transport Limited are both located at the Old Southern Main Road, McBean Village, Couva. Seetrans listed address is: 85-87 Old Southern Main Road, McBean Village Couva. CDS Transport Limited’s address is listed as: Light Pole 88, Old Southern Main Road, McBean, Couva.
