Winston Dookeran has warned members of his Congress of the People against becoming a party involved in the politics of protest.
Dookeran added: "Let us take this country to where we want it to go, not where we are being forced to go, but to where we have never seen before. That is the
challenge and this is where are now."
Speaking at the party's national council meeting in Chaguanas Sunday Dookeran there is a need for dynamism in COP but change must happen with a clear purpose.
"We must be careful that in so accepting the challenge ahead of us, that we do not succumb to a party which is anchored in the politics of protest," the COP leader said.
He aded that the politics of protest "will be momentary pleasure, but in the long run it will be a great loss for this nation. That is the choice we are facing at this turn, and that is the choice all members will have to deliberate on."
He had an important question for his party's membership. "Are you going to allow the politics of protest and a momentary expression of your frustration to derail the entire nobility of your cause which brought you here in the first place?"
Dookeran reminded COP that its approach will always win in the long run, noting that it helped COP win six parliamentary seats in the general election in 2010 and 25 seats in the local elections that followed in July.
He reminded members of a speech he made at Mid-Centre Mall in 2006 in which he stated that people must not mistake "my politeness for weakness, or my patience for indecision. I derive my strength from my deeds and my confidence from the results of my decision."
He said, "I fight real battles. I do not surrender to those who are prepared to compromise to special interests. The battle is on and I am prepared to fight, and it will be a fight for my country of my birth, for the people with whom I live."
Dookeran added: "Let us take this country to where we want it to go, not where we are being forced to go, but to where we have never seen before. That is the
challenge and this is where are now."
