The Trinidad Express reported Tuesday that a director of Gopaul and Company Ltd. has insisted that the company has not been awarded a contract by state-owned National Petroleum (NP) as reported in the media.
However the paper said the director, who gave an interview on the condition of anonymity, also stated that the company is the best to execute the contract.
"We are very experienced in fulfilling a contract to supply and maintain 20 tractor trailer units (for NP). We have a vast amount of experience in haulage and transportation, 12 years plus. We are very capable of fulfilling the scope of work in the contract," it quoted the director as saying.
The opposition is demanding full details of the board discussions that concluded that the contract should be awarded to Gopaul over CDS Transport of Couva. A lawyer for CDS has written the line minister Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan about what the company called a bias in the award of the contract. The energy minister has launched an investigation.
The Express said the the director was adamant that his company is "very capable of fulfilling the scope of work in the contract", noting that NP did not give the company and advantage in the tendering process.
"It was a public tender advertised in the newspaper and being in our line of work, the company pursued and offered a tender based on all the requirements. To date no award has been issued to Gopaul & Co Ltd and it will respect any decision the board of directors of NP arrives at," the paper reported the director as saying
The paper said the director suggested the matter has only become controversial because of the request for an investigation made to the energy minister by CDS.
