De Lima enters COP leadership race

There is a second challenger in the race to lead the Congress of the People (COP).

The candidate is vice-chairman Vernon de Lima who has announced that he will be contesting the post of COP leader in the July 3 internal election.

He is the second person to enter. Sports Minister Anil Roberts was the first to declare that he would run against the incumbent leader, Winston Dookeran.

And there is a strong lobby for another cabinet member, Prakash Ramadhar, to enter his name on the ballot.

Dookeran has not said if he will run again. De Lima has no problem with his leader but believes someone outside of Parliament should take on the leadership role in the party.

“I think Mr Dookeran’s a good man, but people should be given an opportunity to vote for who they want,” De Lima told reporters.

However he said the past year of government has indicated to him that it may be necessary for the leaders of parties in the People’s Partnership to remain outside of the Cabinet in order to avoid being silenced by the rule of collective responsibility.

“We need to have leaders outside the Cabinet who are free to observe and speak on issues as they arise in order to guide the cohesiveness of the process and work out matters,” he said.

He said being in cabinet is a handicap since a leader is unable to say what sometimes needs to be said.
