Letter: AG is right about evidence to charge Calder Hart

We know the wheels of justice turn very slowly in Trinidad and Tobago, but I have to agree with the Attorney General that there is sufficient evidence to try the ex-chairman of the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago Ltd with perjury.

Speculation is running wild as to why he left the country not long after the conclusion of the enquiry.

He ducked the country after then Prime Minister Patrick Manning told him what we don't know, but this was done during the height of the police enquiry into the matter.

The Director of Public Prosecutions' response to the Attorney General's concern over the delay in laying at least a perjury charge stated in part that it cannot be done until there is sufficient quality evidence is obtained.

I don't know what is "quality" in a prosecutorial sense, but in my mind it is more than sufficient to satisfy the laying of the charge.

I find it very interesting that "quality" evidence cannot be obtained, and was that obtained when the DPP unsuccessfully prosecuted Dr Vijay Narayisingh and his wife on criminal charges?

The evidence is so much more convincing in this instance, Mr DPP.
