October carnival coming: Gypsy

Tobago's tourism sector is about to get a big boost from an idea hatched by Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism Winston "Gypsy" Peters. He wants to introduce an October Carnival in the island to bring in visitors at a time when tourist arrivals are slow.

Speaking with the Trinidad Express about the plan, Peters said he will make sure he holds discussions on the idea with principal stakeholders, including the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) and his cabinet colleague, Minister of Tobago Development, Vernella Alleyne-Toppin

"In Tobago we already have things going for us, we have the sea, we have the sun, we have the sand, we have the sights, the fauna, but now there is a very slow period. Hoteliers are complaining of low occupancy rates, so I believe if we make a concerted effort to bring people in for more than we have already, it is going to work for all of us," Peters told the paper.

Peters said he is considering an October carnival because it's the close of the whole Carnival circuit for the year with Miami carnival being the last. Peters is a founding member of Miami carnival and he has seen carnivals all over the world.

He said the Tobago carnival idea can work out very well with good marketing. "Tobago has its own identity and there are things in Tobago that are different to Trinidad and we must incorporate that and then we will have all the cultural expressions of Tobago in the Carnival and that will augur well," he said.
