COP leader Winston Dookeran's NY message: Put country first

Fellow Citizens,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy New Year and for 2011 to be greater and better.

Over the next few months, we have the potential to remove much of the dark clouds that hover over our heads.

Let us remember that to progress we must stay united in our determination to succeed. I urge all citizens to get involved as we take our country forward. I recall in my budget presentation I said, "we must become what we want to be".

Everyone has a role to play. You can start by taking charge in your community. Liaise with your Local Government Representative, your area's NGO or community group and your Member of Parliament. See what can be done to improve the quality of life for ALL the people in your area. The State offers assistance in a variety of ways and with collaboration, a lot can be achieved.

As Political Leader of the Congress of the People, I urge all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to PUT COUNTRY FIRST. We may be small on the world's stage, but we can teach the larger countries a lesson or two on nation building.

Let us resolve to make Trinidad and Tobago a shining star for the rest of the world. In this regard, I would like everyone, especially our young people, to get involved with our initiative 'A PATRIOTIC SERIES', which seeks to create a lasting bond between country and citizen and which will be launched early in the new year. It is a most appropriate programme that will lead up to our 50th Anniversary as an Independent nation in 2012.

Let our New Year's resolution be, to put country first. Each citizen can start by making his/her community a better place. When our community gets stronger, our country benefits and in the words of a great patriot..."though things may be hard and that may be sad, I will always love you sweet Tobago and Trinidad...."
