Sir Ellis passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, two days after celebrating his 93 birthday with close family members.
The government confirmed on Friday that there will be a state funeral for Sir Ellis. In an official release it said Sir Ellis will have the honour "as is befitting his status and accomplishments as one of Trinidad and Tobago’s greatest legal and academic minds and a contributor to nation building."
In another release, the national security ministry said, "Given the considerable and notable contribution that the late Sir Ellis Clarke has made to Trinidad and Tobago, and in keeping with proper Flag Protocol, the Minister of National Security...has advised that the National Flag should be flown at half-mast...and will remain in effect until the day of the funeral service of Sir Ellis Clarke."
It added, "The Ministry of National Security and by extension the Government of Trinidad and Tobago extends its condolences to the family and friends of the first President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Sir Ellis Clarke."
The government also announced Friday that it will provide opportunities for members of the public to sign condolence books in memory of Sir Ellis from Monday 3rd January, 2011 to Thursday 6th January, 2011.
