US to give reasons when it denies visa application

The United States embassy in Port of Spain has given a commitment to try to give Trinidad and Tobago citizens reasons for denial of visas.

Ambassador Beatrice Welters and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Surujrattan Rambachan met Friday to discuss the matter, which was first raised publicly by Sports Minister Anil Roberts.

Roberts had suggested that as a courtesy when a citizen is denied a visa, the U.S. embassy should provide an explanation about why it denied the visa application.

The embassy first suggested that Roberts was out of place to publicly express such views, suggesting that there is an established protocol for such matters.

The foreign affairs ministry said Welters assured Rambachan that the embassy would make attempts would be made to provide, "wherever possible, the reason for the denial of an application".

Welters and Rambachan held "open discussions focused on addressing the challenges identified by Trinidad and Tobago nationals seeking entry into the United States, including students, individuals seeking specialised medical attention and business people," a statement from the ministry said.

It added that Rambachan reaffirmed the Government's "appreciation of the immigration regulations" but expressed concerns about the application of the regulations.
