Section of main T&T highway collapses

The Works Ministry in Trinidad and Tobago is working to repair a section of the Solomon Hochoy Higway that collapsed Friday morning, causing a huge traffic pileup on the northbound lane.

The highway is the main link between Port of Spain and San Fernando.

Hayden Phillip, who is supervising the repairs, told reporters the foundation was washed away because an underground culvert could not withstand the volume of water and debris from several days of heavy rainfall.

He said workers are installing a bigger culvert and repaving the road. He promised that the job would be completed Saturday. However, there is more work to be done on the southbound lane, which has also suffered from heavy erosion.

The Ministry has warned of delays on the highway and urged motorists to use alternative routes.
