Rowley won't get into "dogfight" with PM in CWC election

Keith Rowley told local media Tuesday he won't get into any "dogfight" with the leader of the United National Congress (UNC) in the Chaguanas West byelection.

The leader of the People's National Movement (PNM) was responding to Monday's comment by Kamla Persad-Bissessar that there was collusion between Jack Warner and the PNM.

She also stated that Rowley was not walking in the constituency with his candidate because Warner was in an alliance with the PNM. Persad-Bissessar stated that Rowley and his party were trying to get a foothold in the constituency by using Warner to enter through a back door.

"You will not see Rowley in Chaguanas West because he has Jack Warner to fight for him. Why else would he disappear from the campaign?” she asked.

Rowley responded by stating that Persad-Bissessar would not determine the PNM’s strategy. "We decline the invitation of the Prime Minister to run our campaign for us,” he said. "The PNM is a mature political party. We have an organisation and we have our own strategy," he added.

The PNM leader described his candidate as "excellent" and stated that the party is fully behind Avinash Singh, whom he said is "meeting the electorate every day.”

He added, "Avinash Singh is a 25-year-old graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI) who is a self-employed commercial farmer from a well respected family.

"For us, he represents a good candidate. He is an upright and decent young man. He is doing everything which this country is asking young people to do, that is be productive and serve our country with dignity. The Prime Minister need to rethink her position and should apologise to him."
