No jack-Rowley alliance: PNM

The People's National Movement (PNM) on Tuesday rejected claims by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar that there is collusion between the PNM and Jack Warner in the Chaguanas West byelection.

Speaking at a political meeting Monday night Persad-Bissessar stated that the PNM has put a weak candidate in the constituency because Warner is there to help the party. She asked why PNM leader Keith Rowley is absent from the campaign and also wanted to know when Warner would criticise the PNM.

Opposition Senator Pennelope Beckles-Robinson dismissed the UNC leader's claims as a “ridiculous political ploy”. She told reporters there is no evidence to support what the PM stated.

"That is the kind of approach I think people should totally and absolutely reject," she told reporters. She said the UNC is panicking.

PNM Senator Fitzgerald Hinds also commented on the matter, telling reporters it is "outrageous" to think there would be collusion between Rowley and Warner. He said the PNM does not need Warner in order to win the Chaguanas West by-election.

“We have been here long before Jack Warner and we will go to government in the next elections in spite of Jack Warner," Hinds said.

His comments are not consistent with what the chairman of his party has said. In an interview on radio just after the election was announced Franklin Khan said he doesn't expect the PNM candidate to win.

In the 2010 general election the PNM candidate received just over 1300 votes and Warner had a landslide of over 18,000 votes.
