UNC screening for CWC on track; PP planning for anniversary rally

The United National Congress (UNC) would meet "in a few days" to work out a plan for screening of candidates for the by-election in the Chaguanas West constituency.

That assurance came Friday from Roodal Moonilal, one of the party's deputy political leaders.
Moonilal, who is the Housing Minister, spoke with reporters after a media conference to give details of Tuesday's draw for 500 lots of land in the Ministry’s Land for the Landless programme.

The seat became vacant with the resignation of Jack Warner as the MP for the constituency. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has not yet announced a date for the election, which must be held no later than August 9.

Moonilal said several persons have shown an interest in being the party's candidate for the constituency. "I know that persons have already collected their nomination forms and in some instances have already deposited their forms," he said.
Warner is one of those persons. He confirmed on Wednesday that he has collected his nomination papers.

Moonilal said the major focus of the party right now is the thiurd anniversary celebration of the People's Partnership victory in the 2010 general election, which would be held at Mid Centre Mall Car Park. The annual rally is held to account to the people.
