Jack Warner told reporters on Saturday he offered to resign from cabinet two weeks ago. He said it was because of the bad press about him.

"At the time, there was this weekly verbiage, garbage, in the newspaper," he said, adding that he had evidence that a lot more was going to come out from the Concacaf congress in Panama.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar accepted Warner's resignation last Sunday. The next day he resigned as chairman of the United National Congress (UNC) and on Friday he quit his parliamentary post as the representative for Chaguanas West.

The opposition presented a motion in the House of Representatives on Friday claiming that the Prime Minister failed to deal expeditiously with the former National Security minister while he was in office.

During the debate Leader of the House Roodal Moonilal refuted that argument.

“The Member for Chaguanas West, in the highest tradition of our democracy and parliamentary democracy, offered to the leader, the Prime Minister, his resignation. He offered it on Sunday last, on the 21st, he again offered his resignation, it was accepted in that tradition,” Moonilal said.

In winding up the debate on the motion, Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley said there were questions that remain unanswered as to the exact reason why the Prime Minister accepted Warner’s resignation.

Rowley demanded that the PM provide a a full explanation on why she accepted Warner's resignation when she did.

Persad-Bissessar spoke publicly about the matter at a political meeting in Siparia last Monday.
