Just eighteen hours after he was declared victorious in the February 19 polls, Dr. Keith Claudius Mitchell was sworn in Prime Minister by the country’s Governor General, Sir Carlyle Glean.
Mitchell's historic victory of winning all the seats in a general election for the second time (he previously did it in 1999) makes Mitchell Grenada’s ninth Prime Minister.
A packed audience witnessed the ceremony at the Trade Centre in Grand Anse St. George’s.
In addressing the audience Mitchell pleaded with his supporters to not harass political opponents. “We do not care about political labels, just do the people's work,” he declared.
The Prime Minister committed to putting a cabinet in place by next week and assured that his cabinet will be smaller than that of the previous Government. And Mitchell very sternly warned his MPs against indiscipline and bickering about not being placed in the cabinet.
He said this approach is to bring the right synergies together to address the economic hardship burdening the country at this time.
“It was a long fought hard campaign; as you can see, winning was easy, governing will be difficult, but if we unite our collective human capital, we can do anything” the Prime Minister affirmed.
