As a young person who takes a great interest in the affairs of my country, I was somewhat disappointed with the contributions of the Chief Secretary of the THA Mr. Orville London.
It seems as though he used up most of his time defending the PNM policies implemented under his leadership at the Tobago House of Assembly despite the flaws they may have had. What was a time for serious discussion and a time to put on record your plans for the FUTURE of Tobago, Mr. London used that time as an opportunity for politicking.
Mr. Hochoy Charles in my view did the same to an extent. Most of his time was spent reiterating what he did during his tenure as Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly. Almost every rebuttal he linked to his time at the THA which, in my view was a complete waste of time because like I said, this was a time for discussion on Tobago’s FUTURE, not the past. Again, I was very disappointed.
Now, Mr. Ashworth Jack was a different story. He was the only candidate with whom I was pleased. He answered every question precisely and to the point. At all times he was on top of things (no pun intended) and he remained cool, calm and collected during the entire debate.

Mr. Jack’s contributions to the debate were the only ones that focused on the Future of Tobago and how Tobago can grow and move forward. From what I saw on Thursday night, Mr. Ashworth Jack is the ideal candidate for Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly and I won’t be surprised if he is, following the THA elections later this month.
Tobago has a lot of potential and is one of the most beautiful places in the world making it a natural gold mine when it comes to tourism. However, in the past years due to neglect, mismanagement and excessive squandering of funds, Tobago’s full potential could not have been realized.

The people of Tobago now have a chance to change that and elect a capable Chief Secretary that will take Tobago to new heights. Also, we now see some much deserved attention being given to Tobago from the central government unlike any other time in our country’s history. I am of the view that Tobagonians will take this fact into consideration when they cast their vote on January 21st to elect a new Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly.
As a young person, I admire Mr. Jack for the stance he has taken and if I had to vote in the THA elections and there was even a shadow of doubt in my mind, Thursday night’s debate has bolstered my confidence in Mr. Ashworth Jack for Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly.
