Prakash settles the matter: COP not leaving government

Prakash Ramadhar on Wednesday pre-empted his party's discussion on a resolution that had as an option a clause committing the Congress of the Party (COP) to leave the government if the Prime Minister refused to fire Jack Warner from cabinet.

The COP political leader said that's not going to happen; COP is not leaving the government.

The resolution, signed by COP's vice-chairman, Vernon De Lima, was scheduled to be debated on Sunday by the party. It demanded the dismissal of Warner and stated that if that did not happen the party must dissociate itself from the government.

Ramadhar said COP is staying in the government even if Warner remains a senior Cabinet Minister. He added that only the Prime Minister can take action against Warner or any minister.

Warner is not amused at De Lima last motion. "I would much prefer to be the first person to comment...about the level of foolishness that comes from one who professes to be a lawyer of repute," The Express newspaper quoted Warner as saying.

The paper said Warner noted that De Lima has a personal grouse against him since De Lima was rejected as a candidate for cabinet.

"Yes, De Lima wanted to be the Minister of National Security and was rejected outright and since then he has continued to be rejected. He is a failure in his own party and on Sunday I will tell the nation that his only claim to fame was when he got silk and that was when this Government came into office," Warner added.

Ramadhar said COP would still debate De Lima's motion on Sunday at the party's national council meeting "in the interest of democracy". He said COP's position on Warner is the same that it took when Warner's name came up with respect to FIFA matters.

"The COP stated then, and continues to hold, that Mr Warner should have stepped aside from his Ministerial position until the investigations into the matter were concluded and decisions had been made as to his role in the matter and culpability or otherwise," Ramadhar said in a media release.

There is "no new situation" concerning Warner, Ramadhar said, adding: "The COP's position remains that Mr Warner should step down from Ministerial responsibility until investigations are concluded."

He said Warner's future is not to be determined by COP. "Mr Warner's refusal to remove himself from Ministerial positions puts the question of whether he should be removed as a Minister in the hands of the Political Leader of his party and Prime Minister and not the COP," Ramadhar stated.

"Therefore the issue of leaving the Partnership simply does not arise, especially in light of the fact that the Party pronounced on this just a few months ago at the April meeting of the National Council," he added.

The Express said it contacted De Lima, who said he leaves the matter for the members of the COP to decide. He also denied that he has any personal grouse against Warner. He also said he did not know that his party had recommended him to be Minister of National Security.
