TT to strengthen diplomatic, trade presence in Panama

Trinidad & Tobago will explore the feasibility of establishing a diplomatic mission in Panama alongside initiatives already in train to further enhance trade ties between both countries.

This has been revealed in a media release from the Office of the Prime Minister with respect to a meeting Monday between Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s.

Martinelli was a feature speaker of the Caribbean Investment Forum (CIF). Following the plenary session CIF, in which the Prime Minister and the President participated, the two Leaders met to discuss issues which will see both countries strengthening relations.

Foreign Affairs and Communications Minister, Dr Surujrattan Rambachan; Trade and Industry Minister, Stephen Cadiz; Energy and Energy Affairs Minister Kevin Ramnarine and Transport Minister, Devant Maharaj were also present for the discussions. Also present were Petrotrin Chairman, Lindsay Gillette, Lake Asphalt CEO, Deonarine Sarabjit and CAL Chairman, Rabindra Moonan.

Both leaders discussed the Partial Scope Agreement between Panama and Trinidad and Tobago and Persad-Bissessar indicated her intention to raise this issue with CARICOM Leaders as early as next week in Barbados.

Already, Trinidad and Tobago has assured Panama of a supply of propane and butane. Trinidad and Tobago will also begin direct sales of butane and propane at market prices and under standard commercial terms to Panama by May 2013.

In addition, the Panamanian Government has assured that it would help Petrotrin and National Petroleum Marketing Company (NPMC) in securing the necessary oil free zone permits, licenses and permissions for the establishment of bunkering operations in Panama for the companies to begin operations this year.

Persad-Bissessar and Martinelli also shared their desire for stronger diplomatic ties between both countries. Martinelli encouraged Trinidad and Tobago to establish an Embassy in Panama.


Foreign Affairs and Communications Minister, Dr Rambachan, has been mandated to report on the feasibility of a Consul-General’s Office or an Embassy in Panama.
