Three dogs owned by a fish vendor in Point Fortin mauled a pregnant woman on Tuesday as she walked past the home where the animals were kept.
Media reports say Kurleen Cooper, 36, underwent emergency surgery and is now complaining that she is not feeling any movement in her womb. One report said one of her arms may have to be amputated.
The dogs tore the flesh off her left arm and bit her on the head, hands, inner leg, left ear and stomach, the reports stated.
Cooper is the mother of three other children, aged six, seven and 17. Relatives say the dogs came from a house owned by Ronnie Maharaj. An employee of Maharaj reportedly called off the dogs.
A passerby and nearby residents rescued Cooper and contacted the police and the Emergency Medical Services. She was initially treated at the Point Fortin Area Hospital and later transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital.
Reports say an employee assisting police with investigations stated that the dogs were loose in the yard and there is no gate to the front of the house.
However media reports say Maharaj's wife, June Garib, stated that when she left for work at 5 in the morning all her dogs were chained at the back of the house.
"When I came home I saw the dogs tied. I asked if anyone let go the dogs and they said 'no'. I don't know if it's my dogs that bit the lady," Garib told local media.
