PM Kamla welcomes UNDP’s Helen Clark, launch of the first Caribbean Human Development Report

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Tuesday extended a warm welcome to Helen Clark, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), who is paying a two-day official visit to Trinidad & Tobago.

Clark’s visit will centre on the regional launch of the first Caribbean Human Development Report(CHDR) by the UNDP entitled “Human Development and the Shift to Better Citizen Security”.

Persad-Bissessar will address the significance of the report’s findings for Trinidad and Tobago at the official launch at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port of Spain on Wednesday.

The Caribbean Human Development Report offers recommendations, based on research and scientific studies, which aim to diminish and prevent violent crime while advancing human development in this region.

Clark is the first woman to lead the UNDP as its administrator and is also UN Under-Secretary-General. Prior to her appointment with the UNDP, she served for nine years as Prime Minister of New Zealand.

Persad-Bissessar collaborated closely with Clark at last year’s United Nations General Assembly, particularly at the high level women’s colloquium which spoke to the theme of women’s political participation.

A media release from the office of the Prime Minister said Persad-Bissessar hopes to further engage with Clark on this and other essential development issues.

In an official statement the PM said, "I am most honoured to host Ms. Helen Clark, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as an official guest of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.

"The upcoming launch of the Caribbean Human Development Report is indeed an auspicious and most significant occasion for the people of Trinidad and Tobago given the Report’s critical insights into the promotion of citizen security.

"I welcome the opportunity to liaise with Ms. Clark and other UNDP officials to discuss the report’s findings as well as the many UNDP-supported initiatives which the Government of Trinidad and Tobago has launched.

"Such cooperation is fundamental in the efforts to promote sustainable development with a focus on citizen security in Trinidad and Tobago and in the wider Caribbean."
