Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar will join other regional leaders Wednesday for the regional launch of the First Caribbean Human Development Report 2012 titled: “Human Development and the Shift to Better Citizen Security”.
The report was produced by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
A media release from the UNDP said the event, which will take place at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port of Spain at 11:30 a.m., will be followed by a UNDP media briefing.
Also present at the launch will be UNDP Administrator Helen Clark and Assistant Administrator and Regional Director – UNDP-RBLAC, Heraldo Muñoz.
In a statement, Persad-Bissessar said: "The upcoming launch of the Caribbean Human Development Report is indeed an auspicious and most significant occasion for the people of Trinidad and Tobago given the Report’s critical insights into the promotion of Citizen Security."
The report notes that rates of violent crime continue to increase in the Caribbean while they are decreasing or stabilizing elsewhere.
The document reviews the state of crime as well as the current efforts and programmes to address the problem in the English and Dutch speaking Caribbean countries, based on a sample of seven countries that were analyzed.
The Report offers evidence-based recommendations to diminish and prevent violent crime while advancing human development in this area.
It seeks a better balance between legitimate law enforcement and social crime prevention and proposes various means for the reduction of street gangs and youth violence, notably through employment opportunities and education, and through eliminating the access to illegal guns.
