A report in the Express newspaper Friday said Patrick Manning in unable to walk without help or speak clearly, citing unnamed medical specialists treating the former Prime Minister at the San Fernando General Hospital.

Manning suffered a stroke two weeks ago at his San Fernando home and was admitted to hospital, where he is being treated by a highly specialised team of doctors.

The Express said doctors reported that Manning is showing signs of improvement and continues to undergo physiotherapy treatment at the hospital.

The paper quoted one medical expert: "He remains in a stable condition and has shown some improvement. He has improved in his leg movement and speech. His treatment continues, especially his physiotherapy which is extremely important at this time."

Manning is eating solid foods and appears to understand what is being said, the Express reported. Visits are still restricted to family members although former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday and his daughter, Mickela, were allowed to visit.

Keith Rowley, the leader of the People's National Movement (PNM) went to see Manning but was told that the former PNM leader was asleep.

A report in a weekly paper stated that Manning's wife, Hazel, refused to speak with Rowley and slammed the door on him.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told reporters she would abide by the family's wishes and not visit Manning. She is keeping in touch with Manning's wife to track the progress of her predecessor.
