Investigate before making claims about quality of drugs: Health Minister

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan told the Express newspaper on Tuesday no one should question the quality of drugs in use in the private and public health sectors without first conducting a thorough investigation.

The minister made the comment in response to a charge by the sister of former Prime Minister Patrick Manning that her brother was administered sub-standard medication and suggested that may have contributed to Manning's stroke.

Dr Petronella Manning Alleyne, a medical practitioner, made the charge at a media conference on Monday. She said Manning had been taking the drug Wafarin since his cardiac surgery in 20024 but the drug did not work last month.

Wafarin is one of a family of drugs used to prevent stroke in heart patients. A report published in 2010 stated that a new study found that Warfarin users appear more likely to develop brain haemorrhage following stroke treatment with the anticoagulant.

Commenting on the matter Khan said each patient responds to medication based on several factors. He said if the drug doesn't work on one person it is not a given that it is no good.

"You have to first conduct an investigation. It all depends on the state of the patient—his blood sugar level, his blood pressure and other factors. You cannot make a statement like that without proof or an investigation," he said.

Khan said he had expected Manning-Alleyne to do her research before making the claim.
