Patrick Manning has started treatment at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington DC.
The former PM and Member of Parliament for San Fernando East left for the United States early Monday morning on an air ambulance. His wife, Hazel, accompanied Manning.
During his stay at the U.S. facility Manning will to undergo physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapy. The state is paying the medical bills, which are estimated to be just under one million dollars.

The Express newspaper said it spoke with Manning's son, Brian, who said his father's physiotherapy begins Wednesday. "He is resting comfortably and he is doing very well," the paper quoted the younger Manning as saying.
"We have a lot of family in that area of Washington DC and he is being well supported by them," he added.

Manning suffered a stroke on January 23 and was admitted to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was being treated by a team of doctors until he was discharged on Monday morning. He has been granted 90 days leave from Parliament.
