Let's talk. Ramadhar wants meeting of PP leaders

Prakash Ramadhar said on Sunday he has written to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar asking for a meeting of the leaders of the People's Partnership coalition to discuss government's progress since taking office.

Ramadhar is the leader of the Congress of the People (COP). Other coalition partners are the United National Congress (UNC) led by Persad-Bissessar, the Movement for Social Justice led by Errol McLeod, The National Joint Action Commiittee led by Makandal Daaga and the Tobago Organisation of the People led by Ashworth Jack.

Ramadhar is also the Minister of Legal Affairs. Speaking at a media conference Sunday he said there are some important issues that need to addressed among all partners.

He said they include "increasing racial tension, the perception of unacceptable levels of corruption, and a non-functioning partnership structure and undermining the credibility of the Government."

Ramadhar told reporters there were high expectations of the new government and it is important for the leadership to assure supporters that they must not lose hope.

"The leaders of the Partnership must therefore get together and have a frank discussion and determine a way forward. We must do this before the end of this year," he said.

"It is really the intent of the Congress of the People to have this meeting to openly and frankly discuss where we are in the politics, and how things are, and how we move forward," Ramadhar added.

Ramadhar's letter, which was sent on Friday said:

"The time has come to assess the performance of the Partnership and the Government. While all of us would no doubt agree that in just a year and a half, the People's Partnership Government has achieved much and has made great strides in righting the wrongs of the past, much of the population is nonetheless frustrated.

"Increasing racial tensions, the perception of unacceptable levels of corruption and a non-functioning Partnership structure are undermining the credibility of the Government...

"The leaders of the People's Partnership must therefore get together and have a frank discussion."
