Kamla says PP coalition is strong and united

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said on Sunday the coalition that she heads is strong and there is no need for concern.

Persad-Bissessar is leader of the United National congress (UNC), the principal partner in the coalition, which comprises the Congress of the People (COP), the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ), the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) and the National Joint Action Committee (NJAC).
She spoke with reporters at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima on day two of her annual children's toy drive. She handed out 8,000 toys in San Fernando on Saturday and said she expected that 10,000 kids would get theirs at Arima.

The UNC leader was responding to comments made earlier by COP leader Prakash Ramadhar who called for a meeting of the five People's Partnership leaders before the end of the year.

Ramadhar said it is critical that such a meeting be convened urgently to discuss the government's performance and deal with issues of concern to supports and the national community.

Persad-Bissessar gave the assurance that in her opinion the partnership is strong and holding. "We are standing together. We are working together. We have been doing well thus far as we move into 2012. I think the Government has worked well, the Partnership is working better," she stated.

The Prime Minister also pointed to signs of better economic performance. "I am sure things will pick up," she added.
