2500 register for Colour Me Orange work program

Hundreds of unemployed citizens continue to congregate outside of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) offices in Port of Spain, hoping to get selected for one of the thousands of jobs being offered in the HDC’s “Colour Me Orange” program.

HDC Managing Director Jearlean John said the corporation received as many as 2,500 applications since Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced the expanded program last Wednesday.

The third phase of the program begins Tuesday.

The program was launched in March 2010 as part of the HDC's campaign to clean and beautify HDC’s housing units across the country.

Last week Persad-Bissessar announced a major expansion in the program, stating that government will put $300 million into existing social program to create 20,0000 jobs in crime “hot spots”.

John told reporters, “We received an overwhelming response for the program this year and it was quite strange to see so many unemployed persons from the East and Central Port-of-Spain.” She said separate registration will take place to accommodate persons from South Trinidad.
