Labour Minister Errol McLeod said Thursday the government of Trinidad and Tobago has approved a plan from his ministry to create a Heroes Park and Museum in Fyzabad to honour incons of the labour movement.
Speaking to repoprters at the post cabinet media briefing, McLeod said the proposal is timely since 2012 marks 75 years since the 1937 labour uprising, which paved the way for independence in 1962.
"The contributions of outstanding labour leaders, who struggled to improve the lives of thousands of workers in T&T and have shaped the labour history, and the nature of current industrial and employment relations in the country, should be properly acknowledged through the institutionalisation of a permanent mechanism for recognition and education," the minister stated.
McLeod himself is a former labour leader who headed the powerful Oilfield Workers' Trade Union (OWTU) for more than two decades.
He said a working committee will develop plans for the park and musem. The Ministry of labour will chair the committee, which would inbclude representatives from the ministries of Local Government, Arts and Multiculturalism, Housing and the Environment, Planning and the Economy, Finance, and Food Production.
The two national trade union groups - NATUC and FITUN - as well as the OWTU will also participate.
