Shabaaz tells coup probe he doesn't know where guns came from or how they got into TT

Jamaal Shabazz insisted on Wednesday that he does not know where the guns came from for the failed Muslimeen coup in 1990.

Shabazz was a member of the radical Muslim group that tried to overthrown the government.

There are reports the weapons were smuggled into the country from then United States. However in testimony before the Commission of Enquiry into the uprising Shabazz said he just didn't know how the gunds entered the country or where they came from.

“To this day I have not had any information regarding how it reached in the country,” he said.

Shabazz told the commission he was a junior member of the group's leadership council and it was against the rules to ask about these matters from Hasan Anyabwile, the Muslimeen's second in command.

“Two days before the coup, I asked about weapons and they told me what type we were to use. I could not ask Hasan where it came from or where it was stashed,” he said.

Concerning actual plans for the coup d’etat, Shabazz said his information was that the group of Muslimeen in charge of the Red House was supposed to move the politicians there out of the legislature.

He said no one knew the location and he said he still doesn't know why the plan was abandoned.
