Army chief sent 50,000 rounds of ammunition for troops to battle Muslimeen during failed coup

Retired Brigadier General, Carlton Alphonso, said on Wednesday he sent 50,000 rounds of ammunition to the First Battalion of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force for an impending attack on insurgents at the Red House during the 1990 failed Muslimeen coup.

Alphonso made the statement during testimony at the Commission of Enquiry into the 1990 Attempted Coup.

The Brigadier said the head of the batallion who was on the ground, Colonel Vidale, made the request for the ammunition. However he said he had the final say as to how the ammunition was to be distributed.

"I made an assessment of the situation that I heard about the Muslimeen having attacked the Red House and having done what they did. I anticipated a fire fight of some sort. The idea is to win the fire fight," he told commissioners.

He said he anticipated that members of the Defence Force would have required more ammunition but at the time thought they had enough although Major John Sandy made a request for more.
