Rowley wants IC investigation of NP contract

Keith Rowley has accused Attorney General Anand Ramlogan of a coverup with respect to a contract at the National Petroleum Marketing Company (NP) and has written the Integrity Commission asking for a "thorough investigation".

Despite statements by Ramlogan at Thursday's post cabinet news conference that no company was favoured in the controversial contract and that no contract was ever awarded Rowley is still suggesting that there is a link to Gopaul and Company, whose directors are friends of the Prime Minister.

The opposition leader is insisting that the tender process "had been corruptly compromised."

He stated, "In the face of clear cut attempts at bid rigging at NP, the Attorney General has intervened in an attempt to disconnect the political directorate and the elements of the board at NP from being identified to be held accountable for any possible misconduct."

Rowley charged that the AG "is attempting to use the authority of his office to sway public opinion from the real issue at NP for the protection of person or persons who should be made to account for their action and who should quite properly be removed from conducting the State's business at NP."

Rowley is also asking the Integrity Commission to take immediate steps to protect all NP's documents related to the investigation.

Ramlogan went into great detail on thursday to explain the circumstances that led to his decision to recommend that the bid process be quashed. And he made it clear that no one company had any special treatment.

Ramlogan noted that it was an open tender and that 14 companies sent in tender bids. He also said there was no need for any company to pre-qualify and that anyone who wished to bid was welcome to do so.

However he said the evaluation process was flawed because of inconsistencies.
