Moonilal tells new Green Fund committee to spend money wisely

Environment Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal said on Friday the years 2000 to the present time was “a missing decade of environmental activities.”

Moonilal made the comment as he presented instruments of appointment to new members of the Green Fund Advisory Committee.

Moonilal noted that only $12 million has been used from the $2.3 billion Green Fund during the last decade. He said that is a cause for concern for the fund that was established in 2000.

He said the EMA has accessed $11 million for the Nariva swamp reforestation programme and the bulk of the money available - $2.3 billion - is available.

That's because under the previous administration the Green Fund regulations only allowed state companies and companies under the Company Act to access funds.

The new government has changed the regulations were amended to include community groups registered with the Ministry of Community Development or Tobago House of Assembly (THA) and registered non-governmental organisations.

The minister urged Committee members to make sure the funds are investing in protecting the enviroment and told them to do so wisely.

Members of the board:

  • Inshan Meahjohn—Chairman
  • Samuel Ragbir
  • Andrew Cross
  • Rajiv Rikki
  • Marina Narinesingh
  • Vishnu Moonansingh
  • Fallon Attai
  • Mr Noel Foderingham
