Dookeran optimistic about T&T economy

Finance Minister Winston Dookeran is optimistic about Trinidad and Tobago's economic future.

He said Government is seeking deeper partnerships with the local financial sector and announced that negotiations have been completed with the Inter-American Development Bank for US$1.3 billion to be invested in the public sector investment programme over the coming years.

Dookeran gave the assurance that Government's priority is to ensure economic balance.

"The economic plan that we have spoken about is a plan that has been structured and sequenced in order to be able to ensure its durability and also to work towards the goal of major transformation in the years to come," Dookeran said.

Dookeran said the Government is re-prioritising its spending to focus on growth of fiscal programmes in order to put the country's balance sheet in order.

He also confirmed that there are now signs of diversification within the non-energy sector. The minister also noted that an assessment by an international financial team has shown that the financial system remains stable despite the Clico collapse.
